Student Resources

Study Abroad

Whether you are looking for short-term, semester, or year-long options, our faculty work closely with you to find an option that fits your needs and goals. Two programs we like to highlight:

Scholarships

Competitive scholarships are available to students for study abroad. For more information, please click to see WLC Scholarships and Study Abroad Scholarships.

Stammtisch

Join students, faculty, and members of the community as we gather to speak German and get to know each other in an informal setting at Sir Ben's Tavern (805 E Superior St). During the academic year, we meet every first Friday of the month, starting around 6 pm. Please contact one of the German Studies faculty members for more information.

Der deutsche Kulturklub

With trips, cultural events, hikes, parties, and more, the German Culture Club is a student-run organization for all things related to German language and culture.

Please contact Kristen Hylenski ([email protected]) for information on upcoming events or check out our Facebook group: UMD deutsche Kultur Klub.

Departmental Honors

Students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.30 in all major courses may be invited by faculty to submit a sample of their work, in order to be considered for departmental honors and to receive a degree with distinction. Please contact the department for further information.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Projects (UROP)

Students are encouraged to contact a faculty member if they would like to pursue an independent research project in the field of German Studies.  Click UROP for more information.
