The Department of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies (ELWS) researches and teaches literature, linguistics, and writing, including the pedagogies or theories of these three disciplines. Our department is committed to scholarship and creative activities that increase knowledge and understanding of the world, and to dedicated services to the profession, university, and community. Faculty produce scholarship and creative work across a variety of media, reflecting a rich diversity of theoretical methods and approaches, and teach students to read carefully, think critically, and write clearly, through the study of literature, rhetorical situations, linguistic and media phenomena, and their cultural, critical, and aesthetic contexts. ELWS students develop, through the study of literature, linguistics, rhetoric, writing, and teaching, an understanding of and respect for human diversity; they explore a variety of critical and scholarly approaches to literature, linguistics, rhetoric, writing, design, and book history; and they read perceptively, think critically and creatively, write effectively, and engage meaningfully with the complex societies in which they live. The department aims to prepare students both as professionals and citizens committed to lifelong learning.
