Looking Up Classes

Learning about the Liberal Education program, looking at the UMD Catalog degree requirements, and learning about your APAS report should be a good beginning to understanding what courses you will need in order to graduate. Now you can start thinking about which courses you want to take during your first semester at UMD.

The tools discussed on this page will help you practice how to choose courses and put them into your Registration Shopping Cart. You can then discuss your Shopping Cart items with an advisor when you have your individual registration appointment.

Preparing to choose classes (as discussed on previous pages):

  • Review the UMD Catalog requirements for your major -- or a major that interests you
  • Review your Academic Credit Report (ACR) to see any transferring courses
  • Review the APAS Report for your declared major or an exploratory major

There are two primary ways to search for classes and start building your schedule:

  • the Schedule Builder tool, which allows you to put together multiple schedule options and then feeds your chosen courses into the Registration system
  • searching and adding courses directly within the Class Search and Registration system

It's helpful to understand both systems. Please take some time to go through both of these guides:

Some goals to keep in mind for a successful registration

  • Classes that allow you to explore
  • Classes that help you make progress in your major
  • Classes that help fulfill other requirements (such as Liberal Education categories)
  • Classes that provide a balanced day/week (along with plenty of time for studying, work, exercise, socializing, hobbies, etc.)
  • Classes that help you to "be at your best" and to get the most from your college experience -- Check out available Academic Skills Classes within UMD's Academic Writing and Learning Center
