Music Opportunities for all UMD Students | Fall 2018 Handout

The UMD Bulldog Marching Band performs at all UMD home football games, Minnesota State Fair, and the Christmas City of the North Parade, as well as a number of other campus and community events.

Chamber Singers is an auditioned chamber ensemble selected from the membership of University Singers. Members of the Chamber Singers explore the rich variety of music for small ensemble, with an emphasis on non-conducted or self-conducted performances. Chamber singers is open to students of all majors and minors. 

Concert Band In Concert

Hearings for the Concert Band will be held in conjunction with the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and will also be held in Humanities 226. The Concert Band is a unit comprised primarily of non-music majors and performs the finest in band literature. The group performs a campus concert every semester. No audition is required for participation, although we would like to hear members play the first week of classes for chair placement only. There will be a sign-up sheet outside the office.

This choir is a non-auditioned choral ensemble that is open to students of all majors. Concert Choral is dedicated to the rehearsal and performance of literature from variety of cultures and historical periods. Concert Chorale is directed by Dr. David Chin.

UMD Jazz offers several jazz combos that are taken for credit. These groups place emphasis on developing small group skills including improvisation and composition by preparing and performing standard and original compositions.

The University of Minnesota Duluth Opera Studio, serves both the graduate and undergraduate vocal studies majors and other qualified singers.

Our students are given the opportunity to perform in chamber ensembles, master classes, weekly student recitals, musicals, chamber orchestra, symphony orchestra and a variety of other string ensembles.

The UMD Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Gene Koshinski, performs a wide variety of literature including historically significant works; contemporary trends in percussion ensemble literature; world music; elements of popular music; and brand new works for percussion. 

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble is a select unit of approximately 50 music and non-music majors and is one of the premier ensembles in the UMD Department of Music. The ensemble regularly performs new compositions for the wind medium and programs the most outstanding literature currently available.

This choir is the premier large ensemble in the UMD choral program and is open to students of any major, by auditionUniversity Singers maintains an active performance schedule and incorporates annual concert traditions. University Singers is conducted by Dr. Richard W. Robbins.
