John O’Neill's responsibility at UMD involves teaching upper level graphic design and web design courses. When not teaching, John O’Neill is the Design Director of Thinkhaus, a socially conscious graphic design company which he founded in 2007. Under his leadership Thinkhaus provides its design services to better prepare clients to meet communication and branding challenges for a more sustainable and transparent business environment. John's design work spans across several platforms including print, web and brand identity. His work has been awarded and published internationally in books regarding logo design, designing layouts and sustainability in graphic design. As a result of his socially conscious design practice, he is involved with community outreach and academic research regarding social entrepreneurship, stereotypes within mass media and social equality for people with disabilities. In addition to his design practice, he continues to develop a photography portfolio that visually documents urban and rural landscapes. This work has been exhibited in art and photography galleries across the United States. John came to UMD with experience teaching at Virginia State University, Chowan University and Virginia Commonwealth University. John holds an MFA degree in Graphic Design from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. He also graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia with a BFA degree in Graphic Design and a minor in Photography.
