WHAT IS REQUIRED? Curious what you will need to begin our programs? Here is a helpful guide to ensure you are on the right track!

Department of Art and Design 

All students admitted to the Art & Design Department are required to bring a 15-inch Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display (standard 15-inch 2.2GHz with Retina display described below, upgrade if you wish):

  • 15-inch Retina display 

  • 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor 

  • 16GB of 1600MHz memory (RAM)

  • 256GB PCIe-based Flash Storage (hard drive)

  • 3-year AppleCare Protection Plan or alternate CPS 4-year computer accidental coverage plan at UMD Stores


Because this Apple laptop is required for Art & Design, it can be purchased tax-free with a significant educational discount at UMD Stores Computer Corner or umdcc.com/umdstores.com

Note: the UMD Multimedia Hub has several external Apple USB SuperDrives free for student use to install software and burn CDs/DVDs: d.umn.edu/itss/mediahub

Software Requirements

Recommended:

  • 4 GB (or larger) USB Flash Drive (to transfer files) 

  • 1 TB or larger external hard drive (for Mac OS X Time Machine backups)

The department recommends you wait to purchase both hardware and software until you arrive on campus. Computers always have a significant educational discount, and software is often available at a substantially reduced educational rate through UMD Stores. Additional software may be required as you progress through the program

Department of Theatre

All students enrolled in the Department of Theatre's BFA Design and Production Emphasis are recommended to purchase a computer with the same configurations as listed above in the Art & Design Department.

Department of Music

The department of music has a laboratory dedicated for its music students with current music engraving and recording software.  All students should possess a USB Flash Drive 1GB - 2GB. if students choose to purchase a computer the faculty can recommend the purchase of either of the following computer platforms and software options.

The department of music strongly recommends the purchase of either of the following computer and software options:

Macintosh:

  • MacBook Pro or Air recommended 
  • 2 GB RAM 
  • 500GB Hard Drive 
  • USB Flash Drive 2GB - 16GB 
  • 802.11 a/b/g/n Wireless network 
  • Recommended software: Finale 2012 (It is recommended that students intending to purchase Finale wait until they arrive on campus in order to take advantage of educational pricing), Audacity or Garageband audio editing software 

Windows:

  • Windows 8 (available per University licensing agreement) 
  • 2.6 GHz or higher processor
  • 500GB or larger hard drive 
  • 2 GB RAM 
  • 10/100 Ethernet network 
  • 802.11 a/b/g/n Wireless network 
  • CD-RW / DVD-ROM Drive 
  • Recommended software: Finale 2012 (It is recommended that students intending to purchase Finale wait until they arrive on campus in order to take advantage of educational pricing), Audacity or similar audio editing software

Recommended:

  • Maintenance agreement for three years 
  • USB Flash Drive 4GB - 16GB
