Marshall Performing Arts Center:
Having recently celebrated 40 years as the heart of the performing arts on campus, the Marshall Performing Arts Center (MPAC) houses the Department of Theatre and offers two unique performance venues: The Marshall Theater -- a 550-seat flexible thrust/proscenium theater and The Dudley Experimental Theater a 100-seat flexible black-box space. Multiple studio classrooms provide designated space for actors, designers, and dancers. Fully equipped scenic, welding, and costume shops, in addition to state-of-the-art lighting and sound equipment, allow student designers and technicians to explore their craft through lab and production work. Embodying the collaborative energy that is at the center of the performing arts, MPAC is an active home for performers, writers, directors, designers, and technicians, as well as audiences.
In 2014, UMD's School of Fine Arts created a new studio to meet the needs of the Department of Theatre's growing dance program. As part of the MPAC 1 renovation, a 62' x 27' fully-sprung dance floor was installed, as well as changing rooms, a wall of floor-to-ceiling mirrors, curtains, dance barres, lighting, video projector and sound system.
Designed by world-renown architect Cesar Pelli, Weber Music Hall opened in 2002, and with it a whole new world of music emerged for the campus and the Duluth community. The 350-seat concert venue’s inimitable shell-like dome stands out amidst the campus landscape, but it is much more than a visual statement. The shell allows the intimate venue to have the sound of a much larger space. Designed for changeable acoustics, Weber Hall was created with the performer in mind. For the more than 1000 undergraduates participating in music courses each year, not to mention the many students, residents, and guest performers who grace its stage, Weber Music Hall is the grand home of music performance for UMD and the Duluth community.
The Studio is more than just a place to work; it is the place where artistic visions become reality. At UMD, students enrolled in Art and Design courses work in state-of-the-art studios, each designed to fully support creative exploration in a variety of media, including digital video and photography, drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, and more.
The Viz Lab is a multi-disciplinary lab that focuses on the integration of information and emerging visual technologies and the distribution of knowledge to the public.
The Motion and Media Across Disciplines Lab (MMAD Lab) is a 3D motion capture and high definition video production studio that offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary research and creative activity, including animation, video production, and sound engineering. Equipped with a multiple camera shoot studio, green screen cyclorama and backdrops, studio lighting and sound booth, this high-definition video production and motion capture studio fosters faculty collaboration and interdisciplinary research projects.
