Hosted by the UMD Department of Music - the 5th Annual Flute Day is an event geared towards advanced middle school. high school students and adults. The event will feature a flute choir, masterclass and performance by Dr. Paula Gudmundson, Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of Minnesota Duluth and Guest Artist, Dr. Timothy Hagen, Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of Wisconsin Madison. The day concludes a free concert open to the public.

Guest Artist: Amy Porter, Professor of Flute at the University of Michigan
The 4th Annual University of Minnesota Duluth Flute Workshop in Duluth, Minnesota is a three-day flute event featuring some of the nation's finest flutists teaching repertoire classes, orchestral excerpts, piccolo, technique clinics, daily warm-ups and flute ensemble.
This year's artists are Amy Porter, Professor of Flute at the University of Michigan and Dr. Paula Gudmundson, Assistant Professor of Flute at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
The Workshop is open to university flutists, high school flutists, teachers and amateurs. Daily concerts will feature teaching artists and members of the class. The daily schedule includes classes in breathing, tone, articulation, intonation, vibrato, practice habits, performance tips and body awareness. Performers will be playing in two masterclasses. All students will have the opportunity to play in a chamber ensemble and receive a thirty minute mini-lesson with Dr. Gudmundson.
Dr. Paula Gudmundson is one of our very accomplished faculty members and a practitioner of the Alexander Technique, which focuses on the effective means of changing tension habits and improving coordination. This has contributed to her innovative and observant teaching style. Her Alexander Technique study has included the Sweet Briar Alexander Institute in Lynchburg, VA and study with Pedro Alcantara, Missy Vineyard, Lisa First and Tully Hall. Dr. Gudmundson has had the opportunity to perform in masterclasses for Jeanne Baxtresser, Tadeu Cohelo, Carol Wincenc, Keith Underwood, Jeffery Kahner, Jim Walker, and Baroque flutist Barthold Kuijken.
Dr. Gudmundson is a member of the College Music Society, Minnesota Music Teachers Association, Music Teachers National Association, American Composers Forum, Upper Midwest Association (UMFA) and National Flute Association (NFA). Dr. Gudmundson is a graduate of Lawrence University (B.M), University of North Texas (M.M), and University of Minnesota (DMA) as a Berneking Fellow. Her principal teachers include Immanuel Davis, Terri Sundberg, Ernestine Whitman and Adrianne Greenbaum.
