Next Steps

Now that you have officially registered for your first semester at UMD, there are a few more things that you should be thinking about.

Health Insurance Information

  • The University of Minnesota Duluth requires all enrolled students to have health insurance
  • If you already have family health insurance, you will need to watch for an email from the Registrar's Office each semester to waive the Student Health Benefits Plan.
  • If you do not waive the Student Health Benefits Plan, you will be enrolled in (and billed for) the University's insurance. This occurs once per year.

UCard

  • Apply for your UCard: The UCard is a campus photo identification card used by students, faculty, and staff. It serves as your identification for various campus services, programs, and activities, and other optional TCF banking services and Dining Dollars. You can also put money on your UCard at one of the “Cash to Card” machines on campus or on-line. This gives you the capability to use computer lab printers and to purchase lab equipment needed for some of your science courses. The UCard office is open Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; confirm summer hours by calling (218) 726-8814.

Email

  • Check your email: This is the official means of communication for all UMD students. You MUST use your UMD email address when sending emails. If you use your personal email account (Yahoo, personal Gmail, Hotmail, etc.) you will likely not get a response from anyone at UMD due to privacy constraints.  If you are unable to log into your University Gmail account, contact the Information Technology Support Services (ITSS) department.

Social Media

  • Follow us @UMDCLA on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter to receive updates on dates, deadlines, events and happenings in The College of Liberal Arts.

Financial Aid

  • Apply for Financial Aid: Be sure to review the financial aid overview and complete the steps in order to apply for financial aid.

Housing

  • Make arrangements for on-campus or off-campus housing
  • On-Campus Housing: As you consider where to live on-campus, it is important to be aware of common trends: first-year students primarily live in the residence halls or Junction Apartments, and sophomore-seniors primarily live in the apartments. Most juniors and seniors transition to off-campus housing, but some do stay on campus all 4 years. This may help in making your decision for on-campus housing
  • Off-Campus Housing*: Some students also choose to live off campus. There are a lot of opportunities in the Duluth Community. Below are some other ways to find student housing in the Duluth area: *The University of Minnesota does not inspect or endorse any of the rental accommodations identified in these listings.

Getting Textbooks

  • You have the option of purchasing your books when you come to campus or ordering your books online prior to starting classes at UMD.
  • Getting textbooks on campus: come to campus and purchase your books at the bookstore.
  • Getting textbooks online: You can order books online and either have them mailed to your home or available for pick-up during move-in weekend and through the first week of classes.
  • You can look up the courses that you are taking at the online textbook store.

Parking Services

  • Are you planning to bring your car to UMD? If so, you will need a permit of some sort in order to park in restricted lots on campus. Learn more at the Parking Services website.

How much will it cost for tuition and fees?

  • Tuition & Fees: A description of the tuition and fees that you will incur as a student based on your total enrolled credits for a given term.

Academic Calendar

  • Calendar with the important dates you should be aware of as a student.

Advisor Contact Information

  • Your advisor will be assigned in near the beginning of the semester. You will receive an email with the contact information of how to find your advisor.
  • You can also contact the CLA Advising Office any time at [email protected] or 218-726-8180.

Update Personal Contact Information

  • Go online to http://www.d.umn.edu/students/ and click on View/Change Personal Information
  • Be sure to include a cell phone or local phone number just in case a staff or faculty member needs to get in contact with you while you are attending classes at UMD.

Transfer-work Evaluation

Do you have courses that did not transfer smoothly to UMD and need to be reviewed by faculty?

  • Complete the Transfer Course Evaluation form (requires attachment of course syllabus).  NOTE: since faculty are not on contract throughout the summer, there may be a bit of a delay in evaluation
