Liberal Education Requirements

In our diverse and changing world, learning is about more than acquiring information.  The Liberal Education program, coupled with your studies in your major, will help you be ready for that world.

Earning a degree at UMD means that you will receive a liberal education. What does this mean? Imagine yourself in four years:

  • You will be prepared to think critically and communicate your ideas clearly
  • You will be informed about the world
  • You will be committed to meeting social responsibilities

Having a liberal education foundation helps you to become a life-long learner and a globally engaged citizen, which are key components of the University of Minnesota Duluth mission.

The Liberal Education program consists of courses in multiple designated categories.  By weaving these courses throughout your time at UMD, you will acquire the lasting skills that you will use throughout your life. Click here to access a list of courses that satisfy liberal education at UMD.

NOTE: If you have received your Associate of Arts Degree (AA Degree) or Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MNTC), you do not need to satisfy the liberal education courses at UMD. You will simply start into your major lower division & upper division requirements.

Major Requirements

In addition to your liberal education program requirements you have lower division and upper division coursework that is specific to your declared major.

To find these requirements, you can reference the UMD Catalog, as well as handouts or web pages directly from your academic department. In the UMD Catalog, click "Undergraduate Majors." You will then see a list of the majors UMD offers.

When looking at a particular major, you can also view a 4-year sample plan that indicates the recommended course sequence (determined by the department offering that major). Below is a screenshot indicating where to find that sample plan.
