Message from the Dean

You are here

Welcome!

The School of Fine Arts is a community ready to provide a quality fine arts experience for students and the people of our region.

Dean William Payne

It is my privilege to welcome you to the UMD School of Fine Arts. On our web pages you will find information about our Mission and Vision, our degree programs, our many concerts, exhibitions, and performances, and our wonderful people and facilities. We offer a wide array of opportunity, all focused around creating high quality fine arts education for students and the public.

Our academic departments in art & design, music, and theatre offer challenging, practice-based programs perfect for both the pre-professional artist and the student looking for a broad liberal arts education grounded in the fine arts. Our faculty and staff love teaching and learning and they have professional experience in their disciplines. Often, our students and faculty work side by side to create great new works of art, fully realized theatrical performances, or concerts of classical and new compositions.

SFA is also home to the Glensheen Historic Estate, the Tweed Museum of Art, and the UMD Fine Arts Academy. All three provide educational and entertaining programming for the UMD campus and the Northland region. Glensheen welcomes over 60,000 visitors each year and its collection of arts and craft style interior décor is world renowned. The Tweed collection includes significant late 19th century landscape paintings, a fantastic collection of mid-20th century ceramics, and the Richard E. and Dorothy Rawlings Nelson collection of American Indian Art. The Fine Arts Academy offers community music lessons and unique arts programming for children and adults of all ages.

I hope you will explore our web site and come visit our campus. We are always offering a diverse and eclectic array of arts programming. Our degree programs are well known and offer some of the best arts education in the midwest. We would like to meet with you and answer any questions you might have about what we do, and how we do it.

Whether you are just looking for a great play performance, an intriguing exhibition of art, a fabulous concert in a world class venue, or a quality fine arts education, please come and join our community!

Sincerely,
William Payne
